It is What it Is – And Why That’s OK

“It is what it is.” This is something my mother used to say often to forestall complaints about a situation not being as we wished it to be. It’s a mantra that I find very powerful. Accepting that everything and everyone in your life is, simply, exactly what it is, is a powerful perspective that allows you to escape the trap of “coulda, woulda, shoulda.” You don’t have to accept in the sense that you don’t make changes; simply accept that, in this moment, this is the situation. When you do this, you don’t have to waste time wishing things were different, complaining about how things are or wondering how you might have stopped it. All you have to do, is see (accept) what is, decide how you want things to be moving forward, and get on with your life. Simple.
Now, I know this sounds easier said than done so I’m going to give you the first step in accepting that any situation “is what it is” (and you’ll probably remember that you’ve heard me say this before). It’s to express gratitude daily. Express gratitude and appreciate all that is the way you want it in your life as well as any aspect of any situation or person that you can even when there are other aspects that you want to be different. Of course, this is important from a Law of Attraction perspective since like attracts like (so feeling grateful will attract more wonderful things for which to feel grateful). It’s also important from a brain chemistry perspective. Recent brain research has shown that when you focus more on what you love about your life, it creates noticeable changes in your brain. These changes can be seen on brain scans that reveal the activity of the brain. When people were asked to focus on what they love about their life, their brains look healthy on the scans. When they were instructed to focus on what they don’t like, their brains scans were comparable to those of someone who is sick. Our emotions (feelings of gratitude) literally change your brain for the better. So, spend time every day focusing on what is great about your life.
