Do I Need to Take a Class to Start a General Transcription Business?

Written by Loretta Oliver | 0 Comments | Grab This Article Grab This Article

The short answer to that question is no, you do not need to take any special classes or go through months of training to start a general transcription service business from home.

There is a lot of buzz on the internet about working in various fields of transcription business. In fact, there’s so much buzz and advice out there that it can be overwhelming. If you’re interested in starting a general transcription business from home with no special training and no expensive classes then here are a few things you should know.

While transcription courses may be somewhat necessary in the medical transcription field (and they aren’t always in that area either) they are certainly not necessary in the category of general transcription. Some community colleges and technical schools do offer general transcription classes that you can take. They range in length, but are usually very short “diploma” type of programs.

The only advantage I’ve seen with these classes is they offer you a shiny certificate when you’re all finished. For the most part they cover typing, increasing your typing speed, and then recommend a bunch of expensive equipment you don’t even need. Of course, some classes are going to be better than others, but I have yet to find a general transcription class at a community college that seemed completely worth while to give you the tools and resources needed to actually get started.

The truth is you don’t need to shell out hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars for an expensive class and then additional money for all that unnecessary equipment on top of it. You can get started with just your computer and handful of free resources and a little time to practice your skills. Just that little investment of time in yourself and you’ll be headed in the right direction in no time at all.

Transcription Crash Course was designed to help guide you through the resources available to transcriptionists today and start your very own general transcription business from home. Following this quick and easy guide you can actually start a home transcription business this week.
