Raising a family where the weather is usually warmer than the rest of the country can pose some challenges especially when it comes to celebrating fall or other cooler weather holidays. The leaves don’t generally change color. The weather is balmy 80 degree days on any given day and only hint of Fall exists in the chilly 60-ish mornings. There aren’t many leaves to rake and no fireplaces need stoking. Sweaters hardly see the light of day.
So, what can you do to celebrate the change and beauty of the seasons?
Create new traditions your family will cherish. Family traditions are important. If you’ve moved from a cold climate to a warm climate and miss
your normal activities, figure out how you can modify them to fit into your new situation.
Attend a fall festival or plan one of your own. If you look, you’re sure to find a local church fall festival, corn maze, hayride or bon fire close by. If you can’t find one, create your own and invite your friends & neighbors. Make it an annual event.
Decorate your home with colors and smells of the season. Pumpkins, turkeys, grapevine wreaths and fake Fall leaves can be found en masse at your local arts & craft store. Don’t forget to checkout the discount or overstock stores in your area. Emulate the smells Fall by purchasing candles, potpourri, tarts or oil in yummy vanilla, cinnamon, apple or pumpkin fragrance. If you don’t like candles but still want your home to smell like Fall why not think about doing some baking?
Make some yummy goodies. Cooking brings the family together so choose some favorite recipes and get to baking. Gather everyone together in the kitchen and bake up a batch of pumpkin pie, pumpkin bars, pumpkin sugar cookies, snickerdoodles, chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin cookies. The most important thing is spending time together. By making the preparation of goodies a group effort you’ve accomplished that and made a delicious desert.
While it can be a challenge to celebrate Fall when it’s still hot & evergreen outside, it can be done. It can be fun. And it will smell & taste yummy!
After you’re all done decorating, why not make up a batch of these delicious pumpkin sugar cookies and then pour yourself a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy your work.
