If your child stopped breathing.. Would you know what to do?

By: Chaele McMillan

My son was born he had to go into the NICU for a couple of weeks. I couldn't bring him home until I became CPR certified. I believe this should be a must for all parents before they bring their babies home. Since it isn't I really encourage you to take a day to get CPR certified and make sure the one who is keeping the child is CPR certified.
Here is a quick course:
CALL 911!!!!

1) If the infant is NOT breathing but has signs of circulation ( Pulse or movement in repsonse to rescue breaths.... You need to place your mouth over the infants mouth & nose give 1 breath every 3 seconds.

or

2) If the infant is NOT breathing and DOES NOT have signs of circulation
(No movement in response to rescue breaths)... You need to stay calm. locate the compression landmark. I was taught is ine finger below the nipple line on sternum. Do chest compressions with two or three fingers on the sternum. Perform 100 compressions per minute or five compressions per breath.

Stay calm. Continue to do this until Emergency help arrives.

Now visit Red Cross or call your local hospital and find out when the next CPR course is available!
