Homebirth: The Family Choice

By: Kristen Hart

Though many people are surprised that babies are born at home in our modern day society, home birth is an option that more and more families are choosing. Home birth offers the chance to give birth naturally in an environment familiar to the mother and her family. It also gives the baby a safe, gentle welcome into the world.

Studies have shown and are continuing to show that home birth a safe and excellent choice for low risk mothers and their infants. It is as safe, and possibly safer than having a baby in a hospital.

The cesarean section transfer rate for homebirths is much lower than the growing hospital average. This means, that among other things, mother and babies are safer from unnecessary major abdominal surgery.

If you are a low risk woman who desires a natural birth, home birth is truly something to consider. In ages past women birthed their babies comfortably in their own homes with their own family around them. They were attended by wise older women of the family or the community. These women were called midwives.

Today you can enjoy the same privacy and intimacy that comes from giving birth in the comfort and safety of your own home. Home birth midwives are available around the world to help with birth experiences. The added benefit of modern day homebirth is the security of having a hospital nearby. This means that if a transfer becomes necessary it is possible to quickly reach the local hospital.

No article on homebirth would be complete without mention of a growing trend – unassisted homebirth. In these homebirths mothers birth their babies naturally without an outside attendant. Though not for everyone, it appeals to some families. These families feel that childbirth is a natural as conception, and should occur in private.

Many women will feel better home birthing with a seasoned midwife nearby during labor and birth. She can give suggestions and tips to help the birthing woman, and will be completely educated about possible complications and what to do should they arise.

Home birth is safe, and studies are being done, reviewed, and written up every year that prove that safety. Home birth is a gentle choice that honors the family, the baby, and the mother. It is an empowering and intimate experience for a family and their newborn infant.
