Five Tips to Help You Get Through the Holidays

By: Beverly Mahone

5. Prepare your Christmas gift giving and card giving gift well in advance: (that means you should've done it by now). Set a price limit and DO NOT GO OVER IT.

4. Say “no” instead of “yes”: I had to learn this one. If you're asked to do extra help at the office (especially if no overtime pay is involved) and it conflicts with a personal commitment, like volunteering at church, keep the "personal commitment." Advise your boss you'll try to take care of it during regular working hours but don't get trapped into staying after hours. It's a trap you may never be able to get out of even after the holidays are over.

Another thing, don't overload your plate. You can’t be all things to all people so instead of trying to please everybody—just do what you know you can do and forget about the rest. The worst mistake you can make is to say “yes” and then fail to do what you promised because you’ve said yes once too often.

3. Cut back on television time: This is the holiday season. Spend more time with family and friends. If you're going to watch television, do it together and still find ways to engage in conversation. Another reason for cutting back on TV time is when you’re sitting glued to the television, chances are more likely that you’re going to snack on junk food. And where does junk food go? Straight to your stomach, hips and thighs! Instead, use your mouth to sing Christmas carols or join some family members for a walk in the neighborhood as you gaze at other decorations.

2. Decorate your home: You don't have to have an elaborate display but having a tree with all the trimmings and other traditional decorations sets the tone for the holiday spirit. If you have children allow them to help out and make it fun for everyone involved. If you have adult children who are returning home, give them a trip back down memory lane with some old Christmas decorations or Christmas stockings filled with goodies.

1. Give yourself some ME time! Plan to spend more time doing things you like to do. Even though you'll probably be busy Christmas shopping and doing things around the house, make sure you take some time out for yourself. Ladies: Get your hair and nails done. Get a pedicure. Present yourself as the very special gift Santa left for the special man in your life! Go out with girlfriends and share a laugh or two over hot flashes and mood swings. You’ll feel much better after that.
