No matter how much time passes by, there is something about that word “free” that continues to attract others. As I scan the classified looking for cute wording or unique wording, I’m amazed to find the word “free” often missing from ads. People join direct sales for a multitude of reasons. Very often that reason is financial. The person joining is looking to add to the family income, possibly replace an existing income or even begin a nest egg for the future. Direct sales companies must charge fees in order to get supplies to the new distributor. As an independent consultant you have the option to help your new distributor get the kit for free or a reduced rate. I’ll use some average numbers for you. If your company kit is $100, perhaps you can offer your new consultant a $50 kit if they give you $200 in orders from new customers. This is a win win for everyone. If you earn 25% in commissions, you’ll earn $50 on these sales which you can then apply to the cost of the new kit. You’ll have $200 more in sales for your own personal account and your new recruit will have a half price kit. A free kit can be offered to the new distributor if they achieve a bit more in sales. Using those same average commissions, if the new distributor is able to collect $400 in product sales, the commission will pay for the $100 kit. We are using 25% as our average, and 25% of $400 is the $100 kit fee. Your distributor will not pay for the kit and you’ll have $400 in additional personal sales. If you are in a party plan company, make this a party and give any and all freebies and host gifts to your new distributor. This too will help the new distributor in her new business. Prepare some “mini kits” for potential new distributors. Put in a couple of catalogs, some order forms, any current company flyers and a few samples if you have them. Offer free mini kits to anyone considering joining your direct sales team. You can now use the word free in your advertising. I’m not advocating any type of hype or overuse of words, but a simple “ask me how you can get a free kit” certainly might pique the interest of someone considering a direct sales path. Try using free kits and see if your direct sales team grows with new distributors.
