Before lightning strikes: Know what to do in a thunderstorm.

By: Chaele McMillan

How to know if a Thunderstorm is approaching:
1) Look for darkening skies;
2) Flashes of light;
3) Increase in the wind. Remember wind can do as much damage as a thunderstorm or tornado.
4) Listen for the sound of thunder. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

When a Thunderstorm is approaching:
1) Find Shelter.

2) Draw blinds and shades over windows.
If windows break, the shades will prevent glass from shattering into your home. Make sure you stay clear from windows during a thunderstorm.

3) Turn off the Air Conditioner and Computers.
A power surge can cause major damage to appliances.

4) Do not take a bath or shower during a thunderstorm

5) Telephone lines and metal pipes can conduct electricity. Stay off the phone during a thunderstorm.

6) Have a flashlight, extra batteries, battery operated radio and a medical kit.

If you are caught outside, seek shelter. Stay under shorter trees. Place your hands on your knees with your head between them.

Remember if people are struck by lightning, they carry no electrical current but need medical assistance immediately. Make sure you know how to perform CPR.

Be prepared and as always stay calm.
